The Afghan Whigs- Black Love
Because of its placement in an era dominated by grunge rock, this album speaks volumes for the heart-aching rock that can be eloquently produced by real musicians. From the orchestral beginning piece to start the album to the perfect ending song “Faded,” which also includes violins, this album is listen-able all the way through. That is exactly what qualifies an album for this list. “Honky’s Ladder” was an almost-hit-single. This band never got its much-deserved dues. There is something very carnal and sexual about Greg Dulli’s lyrics, which have the perfect tone for “need you” as well as “fuck you” undertones. They even place “ballads” on the album. “Black Love” could be a perfect love-song album or the perfect break-up album, depending on your mood. They are also featured in the movie "Beautiful Girls" which was one of my introductions to the band. I believe I heard them first with my sister, listening to the Bates radio station- also, my introduction to Pavement (unbelievable band).

The Afghan Whigs- Gentleman
All right, if Black Love was subtly about “love” here is their break-up album. The anger and brutal honesty seeps into almost every song here. Once again the lyrics speak volumes for the real-life struggle going on behind the scenes. Greg Dulli struggled with drugs for a significant part of his life. Aside from drugs, sex is constantly on his mind-- "Ladies, I've got a dick for a brain..." This album can be listened to all the way through, and again, they should have had some radio play with these perfectly crafted songs. An album heavy enough for rock, soft in the right spots.
