The Afghan Whigs- Black Love Because of its placement in an era dominated by grunge rock, this album speaks volumes for the heart-aching rock that can be eloquently produced by real musicians. From the orchestral beginning piece to start the album to the perfect ending song “Faded,” which also includes violins, this album is listen-able all the way through. That is exactly what qualifies an album for this list. “Honky’s Ladder” was an almost-hit-single. This band never got its much-deserved dues. There is something very carnal and sexual about Greg Dulli’s lyrics, which have the perfect tone for “need you” as well as “fuck you” undertones. They even place “ballads” on the album. “Black Love” could be a perfect love-song album or the perfect break-up album, depending on your mood.
