Still Catching Up on Concerts

Mid-June, I went to see Kevin Morby at Port City, right here in downtown Portland. It was a perfect venue for his solo acoustic, brief tour with Bedouine. I was intrigued last year when I saw Kevin Morby with his full band at Boston Calling, but seeing stripped down versions of his songs was incredible. And then, for the encore, when he brought out Katie Crutchfield (from Waxahatchee), my night was absolutely complete. They need to make a duet album.

  15. Downtown Lights (with Katie Crutchfield)

Bedouine started the night with her incredible, mesmerizing voice as she worked her way through a solid setlist, playing a cover of an Elton John song, as well as a new song she hasn't recorded yet. She is absolutely an artist to watch because she has extreme potential to become much bigger. The room was absolutely silent through her opening set, which is pretty damn rare these days. I was very impressed. The quiet continued for Kevin Morby, which was great to finally experience a crowd that was there for the music and not solely in a place to drink and talk loudly with their friends!

I went to see The Ballroom Thieves play an outdoor show at Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH a couple of weeks ago and I seriously cannot say enough great things about this band. I know that I've spoken about them on multiple occasions, but I urge you to see them as soon as possible. They are absolutely incredible. This was a free show in a great setting. The park is on the water, overlooking the bridge connecting Maine and New Hampshire, so when the sun set, it just made for a great atmosphere. The Ballroom Thieves played an incredibly full set/full show and left it all on that stage.

My sister and I went to see The Hotelier open for Frank Turner at the beginning of this month, because they've said they won't be playing any shows for a few months (hopefully due to recording a new album which will lead to a tour). They seemed like an interesting choice (as well as the first opener, War on Women) for a Frank Turner show, but both my sister and I pretty much paid the ticket price to see The Hotelier. They have an energy when they play that is infectious, although, they seemed a bit thrown off at the beginning, and looked like they were down a guitarist, scrambling to find a way to allow him to play, searching for a chair that he could sit on sort of off-stage-left. I was wondering if he hurt himself prior to their set, had some kind of accident or something. His energy was missing from the stage, but his guitar parts were still there.

A couple days later, I was back in Boston for probably one of my top 5 favorite artists/singers/ songwriters- Anthony Green (from Circa Survive and Saosin and the Sound of Animals Fighting). His solo work is incredible as well, mostly acoustic, but he includes a full band and unbeknownst to me, he apparently recorded his first solo album with the band Good Old War (whom he brought on this tour with him to open the shows, and then they played as his backing band!) Anthony Green seems to never stop. The guy is always on the road, with his bands or by himself. This tour, he was celebrating the 10th anniversary of "Avalon" which meant he played it in full, full start to finish. Now, "Devil's Song" the closing track is probably one of my favorite songs of the past couple of decades and seeing it live is an incredible experience, as the crowd gets involved.

Good Old War has been a band that I've missed a few times when they've played in Portland, so I was excited to see them open the show and they absolutely blew me away! What an incredible band. They played so well, tight, and definitely had the crowd pumped up and energized for the night.
