My Morning Jacket AND Gary Clark Jr. on the same bill

On Tuesday, a beautiful summer evening, I went to Thompson's Point for one of the shows of this summer that I've been anticipating since I bought my ticket- My Morning Jacket and Gary Clark Jr. (who, by the way, should be headlining his own shows, of which I would pay top dollar to see, but who knows, maybe these artists know each other and maybe he didn't want to pass on the chance to paly with such an incredible band- either way, I knew this would be an amazing show. And neither band disappointed. In fact, they each rose above any expectations I may have had, and blew my mind.

I had seen My Morning Jacket back in 2006 when they opened for Pearl Jam for two nights at the TD Garden. I remember being blown away by their live performance back then. Just the sound of the guitars and the way they played off each other and jammed, creating amazing songs in the moment that sounded nothing like the records. Even before those shows, I remember watching an MTV news clip of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) mentioning My Morning Jacket as THE band to watch for maybe two or three years prior to my first live experience with them. I had seen them on Late Night with Conan O'Brien where they played their now infamous and incredible rock song "One Big Holiday" and absolutely crushed it. I was an instant fan, and hey, if they were good enough for Dave Grohl, they were good enough for me.

They started the night with a few songs where Jim James played acoustic guitar and then they just busted out some of their best live songs, highlights being the jams on "I'm Amazed," "Mahgeetah," "Off the Record" and "Dondante" (which seemed to stretch and clock in at around 15 minutes, at least. So so so damn good. I was like brought to another planet watching them.

And Gary Clark Jr. is to blues and guitar what Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy and B.B. King and Eric Clapton and all the other great blues guitarist were to blues and rock 'n' roll. Holy shit! His set was amazing and he jammed on a few songs, stretching them out for minutes and minutes (re: "When My Train Pulls In"). I found myself observing his body and face as he played guitar and I always find it funny/interesting when these guitarists get so into their own playing that they do strange/funny things with their faces, mostly, and the way their bodies move, it's just interesting to watch them become one with the guitar, the sound, the song.
