Two Concerts of Different Genres

This past Sunday, I went down to Boston to see the Swedish "hit-maker-turned-pop-star(sort of)" named Tove Lo. You might have heard her songs but not necessarily known it was her. She has writing credit for Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do" which earned her a Grammy nomination, as well as work with Icona Pop. She's also had quite a few hits herself, most notably for "Habits" and "Talking Body." She was mentored by Max Martin and Shellback, two phenomenal Swedish producers, and it clearly shows in her style of music. What sets her apart from other "manufactured" pop stars, though, is that she writes her own songs and takes creative control of her stuff. It's all her, all the time, and she does not hold back. This came through especially in her live performance, which apparently, in Boston, she was so moved and amazed with the crowd response that she decided to flash the crowd mid-song during "Talking Body." This was an incredible live show and she certainly did not hold back with her energy (sexual or otherwise). Every one of her songs was great.

Last night, I went to see Run the Jewels, a star-power rap duo consisting of Killer Mike and El-P (both respected rappers on their own, but a true tour de force together as Run the Jewels). They have 3 albums as this duo which have garnered lots of accolades and awards, as well as guest appearances (somehow getting Zach de la Rocha out of his recluse state in music, too).
I haven't been to many rap/hip hop shows, but this one was at the top of my list of "must see." And they did not disappoint, even though they didn't hit the stage until 10:15, the energy was awesome from the first song and they kept it up the entire set without much stopping for chatting in between songs, other than a few political statements here and there, but that comes with the territory of their songs. These two guys are incredible! I can't wait to (hopefully) catch them again at Boston Calling in May, but even if I miss them at the festival, this headlining show was fucking amazing!
