Concerts to Catch Up On

Last Friday night, I traveled to Mansfield, MA (which took about 3.5 hours to get to thanks to Friday rush hour traffic clogging up the highway. It seemed to take forever, but thankfully, I was going to see one of my favorite bands- Brand New- who are potentially breaking up in 2018 (as they seem to be hinting at), so I knew I had to see them. They were opening for Modest Mouse, whom I saw back in November here in Portland.

I've seen Brand New 3x now and for this show they pulled out some great jams and extensions of their songs. Jesse Lacey also played Yoshi Yoshi (which is an old b-side) and one of their "new" songs I Am a Nightmare.

And Modest Mouse had quite a set with a load of people with them on stage for this tour.

Then Sunday night, I traveled to Foxboro to see the "Night in This Lifetime" reunion tour of the "original" Guns 'n' Roses lineup (well, really it was Axl, Slash, and Duff, with replacement guitarist, drummer and two added keyboardists). I've always enjoyed the music, and I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I couldn't miss it! And for some older dudes, they certainly did not disappoint. They pulled out all the classics and added a few new GNR songs from Axl's updated band.

Lenny Kravitz was the opening act, which seemed like an interesting choice, but come to find out, he opened for them back in the day on I believe their last tour in the 1990s. The guy is an undeniably awesome guitarist and songwriter; and his live performance was pretty damn good, although the sound seemed a bit fuzzy.

Last night, I got to see Frightened Rabbit open their short U.S. tour here in Portland. When I found out they were playing in Portland I immediately texted my sister (self-proclaimed biggest Scottish music fan and uber Frightened Rabbit fan) as well as my friend Courtney (who introduced me to their music a few years back) to tell them we had to go, despite having seen them just a mere 2 or 3 months ago in Boston. This venue in Portland is way smaller than the House of Blues and it was packed, sold out, and hot and sweaty, but holy cow, what an amazing show! I am a big fan of their live show, because they really make the songs come alive!

And the opener was a recent musical discovery of mine, a girl named Julien Baker, who with a stripped down, guitar-only sound and a voice that just carried beautifully through the venue and really evoked the emotion in her songs. Despite having problems with her equipment, her set was absolutely incredible!!
