Another Couple of Concerts
This past weekend I was scheduled to see the reunited band, At the Drive-In play in Boston at the House of Blues, but a few hours before, they had to cancel not only this show, but the rest of their tour, due to the singer being sick. I saw it coming, aside from their reunion being one of those "too good to be true" things that would last a long time (hell, the original guitarist, Jim Ward, left the reunion a few days before the tour even started), but they had also cancelled the previous two nights. Needless to say, I was pretty damn bummed. This is the second time I miss out on them, as they were also scheduled to play part of the Beastie Boys' and Rage Against the Machine's "Rhyme and Reason" tour in 2000 at Foxboro Stadium with Busta Rhymes and No Doubt. The entire tour though was cancelled when Mike D flipped over on his bicycle in New York City and broke a few bones. I was really pissed back then. I mean, look at that dream bill from 2000:
This time around, At the Drive-In was scheduled to play with La Butcherettes, which would have been amazing!
The next night, though, I drove down to see Thrice, fresh off their 5 year hiatus, returning with one of the best albums of the year and a live show and set that was just incredible. La Dispute (and Gates) opened for them and put on a great night of post-hardcore music.
Thrice's setlist:
La Dispute was pretty good and reminded me a little bit of mewithoutyou
Gates was the starter for the evening:
Last night, I went to see a great musician/singer-songwriter named Gregory Alan Isakov here in Portland at the State Theatre. The special thing about this show and night is that he was being supported/backed not only by his band, but also a combination of The Ghost Orchestra as well as the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra, which has certainly been making a name for itself lately (having just toured and played with the Ballroom Thieves). The presentation of Isakov's songs was amazing and sounded so beautiful with the orchestras.
