Two Shows in Portland, Of Different Styles

I went to see a great artist that has been under the radar for a few years, and seems to be relevant among the "emo" crowd, perhaps known for her guest-vocal spots for bands like Silverstein, or maybe even because she is married to and has just recently had a child with the singer from the band, blessthefall. Her music though is pure electronic, I mean, except for her first album's reissue, where she replayed all the songs acoustically. The show she put on focused solely on her electronic versions and it was not a disappointment at all. Her name is LIGHTS!


Her music reminds me of Ellie Goulding, except she is of course not as popular.

A few days later, I went to see the metal band, Mastodon at the State Theatre, here in Portland. Having seen them a few years ago in a smaller venue and loving their energy, I was excited to see them with a bigger stage and a bigger crowd. And they were amazing!

Catching Up on Concerts (Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse, and yes, even Brand New)

The excellent Canadian musical collective known as the Broken Social Scene came to Portland last month for an incredible show, which unfortunately did not include the amazing and talented voices of Feist and Emily Haines (both of whom got their start with the band but have since moved on to great careers of their own). Replacement musicians definitely carried their own weight well as the band ripped through a variety of songs, including a Tom Petty cover (to honor the musician who had passed away just a few days prior to this show).
