Poetry for You

"Obscurity In Between the Sheets"

You'll be just another obscure reference
A footnote
A casual mention in the appendix
For the long list of traders

The men who afford boats and bonds
Stock options
And baggage to load
As they travel, alone, up the coast

You'll be a remembrance
Of all the ghosts of all the ghosts of all the girls
From the past
Girls, much like yourself,
Whom these men loved and lost
But at what cost
In a long drawn out battle of wits
Fought
And lost, in the end
But at what cost

You'll be the blanket of stars
That envelopes their hearts
In the darkest part of the day
When these men say "Good night"
And their lovers know
It means "Good bye" in actuality

But these men, who travel light
Know better than
To put an ...
On such a casual encounter
That could only hurt the bedsprings
Rather than a woman's heartstrings

You'll be the one
To pull all the punches
Leaving no traces of scars
Once the feeling of attachment
Rears its ugly head

You'll be the better known
Unknown thought
For the tricks that you show
On the mattress
Than the tricks of the trade
Knowing only what it takes to get laid

These men have all paid
Their dues
To bare their souls
To you
But at what cost
Just for a taste
Of God's forbidden fruit
You offer
They pluck you like an apple
And your sweet juice
Drips from their quivering chins
As you smile and say, "Come in"
Side
With the fathers of daughters
Who've turned into their mothers
Whose sons are the men
To put a number next to the daughter's names
As notches in their bedposts
Scratched
Beside them is a table
And a notebook
Chalk full of ideas
For a better future
A better tomorrow
Without you

But their emotions will get the best of their desires
And their hearts will speak lonely truths
No other fool could pretend
And you'll always be there
In the back of their minds
As they come back up the drive
Greeted by
Children
And a wife with a clueless smile
Apron on
Dinner waiting
And all the man wanted to do was urinate
And shower
Wash the stench of a whore's perfume
Off his skin

And yet,
All you can think is
At least the money's good
