A Couple More Concerts from January.

Weakened Friends has been one of my favorite, recent Portland-local bands of the best few years. They take the classic '90s vibe and sound, as well as the band formation (guitar-bass-drums) and put their own spin on it. With a sound very reminiscent of bands from the '90s like Hole, Nirvana, Mudhoney, L7, etc. there is very much to like and enjoy about this band, featuring two girls and a guy on drums. They always put on a great show and I've seen them multiple times (usually as the opening band for the likes of Silversun Pickups, CHVRCHES, and even Juliana Hatfield). Having a headlining show in Portland just makes sense for them. They had the movie "SpiceWorld" playing on a screen behind them through their whole set, too. It was a night to benefit girls' rock foundations in and around Portland, featuring multiple female-fronted local bands, concluding with Weakened Friends.

Speaking of "local" bands that put on a hell of a live show- one of my "newest" favorite bands has quickly become the trio known as The Ballroom Thieves. This band includes a guitarist-drummer- (both guys) and cellist/bassist (female). Their sound is absolutely incredible and could be described as folk-rock of sorts. They played at the Old South Meeting House in the heart of Boston, the original meeting house for the Boston Tea Party(Partiers). This was an incredible setting for a night of Ballroom Thieves music, as well as the surprise opening act of Darlingside. I was in awe the entire night. Every song from the Ballroom Thieves sounded so great. I was smiling and singing along the whole night.

Darlingside is absolutely worth checking out as well.
