Coheed and Cambria (Neverender Part 3), Live (with The Dear Hunter) AND comedian John Mulaney, Live
Okay, this is probably the 6th or 7th time I've seen Coheed and Cambria. I remember seeing them at Port City Music Hall March 28, 2010, for their album "Year of the Black Rainbow" which is one part of the prequel to their sci-fi story, told in parts with each album (until just recently, with their latest album not being a part of the story). When they came to Portland back then, I was lucky enough to meet them at Bull Moose and watch them play a 5 song acoustic set, all of which was incredible. I remember when it was my turn to step up to the table, I passed my CD insert booklet to them and stutter out praise for their song "Welcome Home" saying that it was "one of the best guitar riffs I've ever heard and quite a way to open an album." I remember Claudio (the lead singer/guitarist) saying "Thanks, man" and then I moved on.
I saw them in Portland, again, in 2015 for a sort of "best of" set as they seemed to be on the road to prep for an album, which would come out the next year. The set was amazing and ended with "Welcome Home" which quickly began a staple song in their sets.
I saw them in 2011, as they celebrated the 10th anniversary of their first album "Second Stage Turbine Blade" by playing it in its entirety, which included an acoustic set from Claudio, on his own, the entire album, and then an encore of more songs from their catalog. This was probably the best and my favorite show I've ever seen from them.
Then, I saw them, again, in 2013 for their release of what should be considered a double album "The Afterman." Another great show and I specifically remember the energy being incredible. I believe it was the first night or one of the first nights of the tour.
Then came the celebration of their second album "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" which included the album in its lengthy entirety. Still my favorite album of theirs. I remember this show seeming like a literal "neverender" and it was incredible. That was in 2014.
In 2016, they came to Boston in support of their new album "The Color Before the Sun." This was definitely the first night of their tour because it included the first time they played any of the new songs live. And, I loved that Glassjaw was the opening band. I remember, they were incredible as well. I had seen them previously open for Brand New at the House of Blues but never got to see them in their heyday.
And so, that brings us to 2017, they played their biggest Boston venue to date, the Blue Hills Pavilion, which is an outdoor venue on the waterfront in Boston and just happens to be one of my least favorite venues because you are so far away from the stage and it's an all-seated venue. But alas, I went because Coheed and Cambria were playing their 3rd album in the story "Good Apollo: I'm Burning Star 4" in its entirety. And after hearing the first track, an instrumental, and Claudio coming out alone to play the acoustic opening track, the band came out and they blasted through "Welcome Home" and I lost my shit! They blasted through the entire album, barely stopping to catch their collective breaths or talk to the audience. And then, they played a 3 song encore.
The Dear Hunter was tapped to be the opening act on the East Coast, I believe, because they are from Boston, MA and include the singer from the former emo band The Receiving End of Sirens. The Dear Hunter was a solo side project that the singer began in order to tell his own creative story through a series of concept albums, which includes 5. He has several other albums, as well, that are not a part of the storyline. His opening set was amazing.

The following night, I was back in Portland and saw the comedian, John Mulaney (who used to write for Saturday Night Live and is most famous for writing improv jokes for Bill Hader's "Stefan" character on Weekend Update).
He has a couple of comedy specials on Netflix that I have watched a few times and so when I saw that he was coming to Portland, I simply could not pass up the chance to see him live. And he did not disappoint.
