Letters to Cleo (the spirit of the '90s is alive and well in Boston)
The night after Caspian, my sister and I went to see a great '90s band, Letters to Cleo, reunite and play one of their last gigs in their hometown on this newest reunion tour. Having never gotten to see them back in their heyday during the '90s, I couldn't wait to see them and hear all their old songs, plus a plethora of new(er) songs. They did not disappoint!
And the night started with Portland/Boston local band the Weakened Friends (whom I've now seen open for CHVRCHES and Silversun Pickups), who definitely deserve a lot more attention because their sound and songwriting is crisp and tight. They sound like they're paying homage to the indie and alternative bands from the '90s that they probably grew up listening to (or finding a little later, since the three of them seem so young).

Last weekend, I went to see local Portland musicians put on their annual Beatles Night tribute, which has grown monumentally over the past 14 years that it's been going on, thanks in large part to a Rolling Stone article that featured a write-up on it being the "best Beatles tribute around" about 2 years ago. One of my childhood schoolmates is in the band, fronted by Spencer Albee (of Rustic Overtones fame and fortune, as well as a rather lucrative solo and other bands throughout the years of his music career). This was my fourth time seeing the show and each year, they do things differently and keep it exciting. Last year they performed "Abbey Road" in its entirety and this year they tackled "The Magical Mystery Tour" both of which were great renditions.

Just like the Beatles Night is an annual Thanksgiving tradition, my friend Heather Pierson performs "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in its entirety (along with other songs) each year, right around this time. I had never had an opportunity to see her performance until this year, as she was playing at a very small venue around the corner from my apartment, in Portland. My friends Vanessa and John brought the musically-inclined kids along, as well, to enjoy the music. It was a great show and I've definitely grown to appreciate jazz music over the years, thanks in large part to albums like this that are childhood memories. I mean, who doesn't remember watching the Charlie Brown Christmas special as a kid (or even now, as an adult, perhaps with yoru own kids)? And Heather Pierson did a fantastic job bringing the album to life and adding her own flair to the sound of it.
