A Couple of Poems About Loneliness
"Flightless Bird"
The story of a loner
Too far gone
To know the difference
Between the distance of where you are
And the miles of road to come
Or even those steps
That lead backwards
Like a dance of regret in reverse
Better take one last glance
In the direction of
That past lover
Who fucked you up
Much more than they'll ever know
Or you'll even admit to
In the end
You've come out freer than a newborn bird
Emerged withe wet wings
From the freshly cracked shell of an egg
To discover a whole new world
Outside the cage you've been kept in
The nest, only a thin barricade
Separating you from the world
You will find as you take flight
And are carried away
With the wind beneath your novice wings
Normandy, 1944
The wall you've built
Expertly crafted
Like a mason with calloused hands
It took years to master the art
Of construction around your heart
Can the vacant ghetto left
Behind the wall, fit two
Me and you
If you let me pass on through
Ot is the empty space meant for you
The wall you've built
Reinforced with mortar, brick, and stone
An impenetrable barricade
What if, I storm the castle
Like Normandy beach in the 1940s
What if, I fight the good fight
Of a holy war
Your beliefs versus my ideals
Can the cold heart of a spurred lover
Hold enough blood left
For a transfusion
To save this soldier of love
Or are the chambers simply cages
Places to hold prisoners of war
You keep as trophies of defeat
I've lost the battle
You've thrown away the key
